Craig HoveyDr. Craig Hovey, clinical associate professor in the Accelerated Learning Program, co-authored The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Global Economics (Penguin, February 2008). The book gives a concise and accessible overview of how global economics impacts daily life, from tariffs and terrorism to OPEC and outsourcing.

Lavatelli exhibits encaustic paintings at “Into the Forest”

Mark Lavatelli, Professor of Humanities, will exhibit recent encaustic paintings in a two-person exhibition called “Into the Forest” at Insite Gallery (810 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo) from March 21 to April 20, 2008. The exhibit features realistic and abstract images inspired by trees, Lavatelli’s primary subject for the last eleven years.

Christopher Stangler is the other featured artist, and the opening reception for the artists will be held on Friday, March 28, from 7-9 p.m.

John FronckowiakJohn Fronckowiak has published “Green programming - Conservation through better programming” on the AOL Developer Network. He outlines “green” programming tools and advocates for the use of shared resources.

Fronckowiak is a clinical assistant professor in the Computer Information Systems department and writes regularly on his blog at the AOL Developer Network.

Dulski Elected to Director/Secretary of Big Train Operator Garden Railway Club

Richard DulskiDr. Richard Dulski, a senior adjunct in the Accelerated Learning Program in Amherst, has been elected to the position of Director/Secretary of the Big Train Operator (BTO) Garden Railway Club.

BTO is an international organization focusing on the hobby of large scale (”G”) model railroading and public education since 1977, with nearly 800 members throughout the world.

Dr. Dulski primarily instructs MBA courses in Global Business, Strategy and Business Development; this appointment furthers such professional activities and involvement.

D’Amato Contributes Three Articles to the Encyclopedia of Time

Suzanne D'AmatoDr. Suzanne D’Amato, assistant professor of education, contributed three articles to the 2007 edition of the Encyclopedia of Time. This five-volume set includes her entries on “Education and Time,” “Mythology,” and “Life-long Learning.”

Dr. Terri BorchersDr. Terri Borchers’ paper, “Poetry’s Strange and Necessary Rhetoric - Connector, Happening, A Mouth - in Times of Global Conflict,” was accepted for presentation at the 6th Annual International Conference on Arts and Humanities in January 2008.

Dr. Borchers is an assistant professor of humanities whose poetry recently appeared in Not Just Air, volumes 5 and 6.

Mulvey Earns Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University at Buffalo

Mary Ellen MulveyMary Ellen Mulvey, director of the Academic Skills Center, has completed her Ph.D. in Educational Administration at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

She successfully presented her dissertation findings on the subject, “Framing the College Experience for Under-prepared Students: A Comparative Study Done in Three Four-year Institutions.”

This study examined the experiences of under-prepared students at three four-year colleges with different institutional orientations. She analyzed how institutionally funded and designed programs for under-prepared students and their student participants were understood within the different institutional contexts and, then, how the experiences of these students were affected by the policies and practices of the different institutions.

Runfola Publishes Op-Ed on Democratic Superdelegates in Buffalo News

Ross RunfolaProfessor Ross T. Runfola’s opinion piece, “Will superdelegates make convention undemocratic?,” appeared in the February 25 edition of the Buffalo News.

He writes, “Many first-time voters are coming out in record numbers in the Democratic primary to support one of two exciting candidates, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

The supreme irony in this watershed election year is that the closeness of the race may set the stage for the will of the rank and file to be ignored at the Democratic National Convention in August.” More »

Pelton to Participate in the Rooftop Poetry Series

Ted Pelton head shotDr. Ted Pelton, associate professor of English and director of Medaille’s Creative Writing Program, will read from his recent fiction as part of the Rooftop Poetry Series at Buffalo State College on Wednesday, February 20 at 4:30 p.m. in Butler Library 210 on the Buffalo State College campus. He will also lead a guided writing improvisation as part of this event.

Dr. Pelton directs a small fiction press, Starcherone Books. More information on his writings can be found at his personal web site, tedpelton.com.
