Medaille College introduced the Medaille Student Veterans Alliance (MSVA) at a reception on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. With Erie County Executive Chris Collins, NYS Senator Mark Grisanti and Erie County Veterans Services Director Marlene Roll in attendance, a welcoming event for the organization in the Kevin I. Sullivan Campus Center included faculty, students, alumni and their families, and introduced the group to the Medaille community.

Sergio R. Rodriguez, a Medaille graduate and Marine Corps veteran, was instrumental in launching the MSVA, which is the first chapter of its kind in Erie County and the second in Western New York. Rodriguez, along with Robert Banas, MSVA’s president, spoke to attendees about how the organization will support veterans and service members as they pursue their education. The group also hopes to extend that support network beyond graduation and into the workforce as a way to ease double-digit unemployment rates among the veteran population.

As part of the national organization Student Veterans of America, and as the first chapter officially chartered in Erie County, the MSVA will provide military veterans with resources, support and advocacy to succeed in higher education and after graduation. With this student group’s launch, Medaille continues its work to develop and to strengthen its student services, which also include dedicated staff and financial aid opportunities at its Buffalo, Amherst and Rochester Campuses. The 100,000 veterans in Erie County represent the third largest countywide population of veterans in New York State.

Those members included junior Alexander Rouse, a 1st team member (2nd time), who was the team’s leading goal scorer and was also the AMCC Co-Player of the Year. For Rouse this was yet another honor to add to the long list he has achieved during his three seasons at Medaille. Rouse has been AMCC 1st Team All Conference all three years, and was the AMCC Newcomer of the Year in 2008. He was named the AMCC Preseason Co-Player of the year this season as well as Co-Player of the Year following the season. He was also named 1st team All-Region by the ECAC in 2009, their first season awarding such an honor.

Joining Rouse on the All-East Region was senior defender Patrick Zelko. Zelko, also a AMCC all-conference player was awarded this honor for the first time. Zelko was a four year starter on a team that made three trips to the NCAA tournament and was a two-time all conference player.

Finally, senior defender Corey Phillips accompanied Rouse and Zelko on the All-East Region for the first time. Phillips was also an All-Region player at Herkimer County CC before he transferred to Medaille. Phillips, the 1st Team AMCC All Conference player came to Medaille after winning a National Championship at HCCC, and led the tough Medaille defense through an amazing playoff run that saw them hold opponents scoreless for 429 minutes of playoff action before conceding a goal to the National Champions.

For more information, check the NSCAA website:
