Medaille Music and Drama to perform "Rent"

by Kara Kane on April 23, 2010

Medaille College’s Music and Drama Club will perform “Rent” in a series of four shows beginning Friday, April 30 at 8 p.m. and continuing on Saturday, May 1 (2 p.m. and 8 p.m.) and Sunday, May 2 (2 p.m.).

“Rent” tells the story of a group of young artists in New York City in the late-1980s/early 1990s as they deal with love, addiction, multiculturalism and AIDS.

Ticket holders for this production will have a rare opportunity to view panels from the WNY AIDS quilt, on loan from AIDS Community Services. Each panel celebrates the life of a loved one who has lost his or her battle with HIV. Many of the panels will be displayed with a card that briefly tells that person’s story. This display extends the outreach that began in March, when Pastor Michael Robinson, director of the men’s ministry at the Buffalo City Mission, gave the Medaille campus and the cast of “Rent” a presentation about homelessness in our region. That outreach continued in early April with a presentation by representatives from AIDS Community Services, who gave the story of “Rent” a human face by putting the story of the show into a historical context.

Parking at Friday’s performance will be extremely limited; shuttle service will be available from the Buffalo Zoo parking lot.

Tickets: General Admission, $10; Medaille students and staff, $5.
