Opening day for SIFE students and the St. Amelia School Smoothie Shack
Students from Medaille College and St. Amelia School in Tonawanda opened a “Smoothie Shack” at St. Amelia School on Wednesday, March 17.
This project is the product of several months of collaboration, with students from Medaille’s SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) working with St. Amelia students to create a venture that combines healthy food choices with financial and business literacy.
As part of CHAMP, Choosing Healthy Alternatives through Mentoring and Play, this volunteer effort educates students in grades 5-8 on making better choices in food selection, and to promote the importance of exercise in personal and family units. The concept, business plan and launch of the Smoothie Shack were driven by St. Amelia students, with guidance from Medaille students on running a business, entrepreneurship, advertising and budgeting. With drinks made from low-fat products and fresh fruit, St. Amelia students will offer smoothies to students and staff twice a week during lunch periods.
