Earlier this fall, the New York State Education Department approved Medaille College’s proposal to offer the Bachelor of Science in Education in Adolescent Teaching: Biology 7-12 with Special Education degree. The program, which will be offered at Medaille’s Buffalo Campus, will complement three other previously-approved undergraduate Adolescent Teaching programs in English, Math and Social Studies, each of which includes a dual certification in special education.
“A new program like this is important due to the national, state and local shortages in math and science teachers,” says Dr. Illana Lane, Acting Dean of the School of Education. “In addition, students enrolled in Medaille’s education programs have the opportunity to receive the TEACH Grant, a federal program which gives up to $16,000 for undergraduate students and $8,000 for graduate students. This is offered to students who agree to teach in high needs areas such as math and science.”
Over two hundred students are enrolled in undergraduate programs in Medaille’s School of Education, which also delivers graduate programs in special education, elementary education and adolescent education at Medaille’s Amherst Campus, and a graduate program in literacy at its Buffalo Campus.
