Reading Center work recognized by Iroquois Central Schools
Dr. Illana Lane, acting dean of the School of Education, and Claudia Conway, clinical assistant professor in the School of Education, received an outstanding achievement award from the Iroquois Central School District’s Board of Education on Nov 9, 2009 at Marilla Primary School in Marilla, NY.
This is in recognition of Medaille’s accomplishments with the district, specifically with the Reading Center’s work with elementary students on literacy and early education.
Within Medaille’s master’s in literacy program, graduate students complete two college supervised practica, providing tutoring in reading and writing with children ages preschool through grade 6. In 2007, Medaille partnered with Marilla Primary School and the Iroquois School District to offer graduate students the opportunity to complete part of their degree requirements by tutoring elementary students through a summer program. This collaboration was proposed and is supervised by Regina Becker, who is the Marilla Primary School Principal, an adjunct instructor and Medaille, and a Medaille graduate.
For the past two summers, about 30 of Medaille’s graduate students in literacy have worked with about 50 elementary students, and they have shown significant growth in their reading and writing skills.
