Plans Unveiled for Medaille College Main Campus Construction and Facility Upgrades

Medaille College will embark on an aggressive schedule of construction and facility upgrades, which will begin by December of 2008. The projects, which total $2.65 million, will include new science labs, student lounge space, and construction of a new student success center. These facilities are designed to continue to meet the growing needs of Medaille’s undergraduate population. Pictures from the event on Flickr »

“The primary focus at Medaille College has always been on our students, and these projects demonstrate that focus on all parts of their college experience,” said Dr. Richard T. Jurasek, president of Medaille College. “Additional and upgraded science labs are critical for our students, as is the Student Success Center. But recreation space is, for many, just as important to the overall college experience. These projects will allow Medaille to continue to meet the needs of our students.”

Science Labs and Lab Prep Area

Medaille will build two new science labs on the third floor of the Main Building. In addition, the existing third floor science lab will be completely renovated, and a lab prep room will be constructed in this science area as well. The new science labs will feature state-of-the-art equipment and supplies, preparing students for careers in science-related field and supporting Medaille’s biology and veterinary technology degree programs.

Huber Hall and Student Success Center

Medaille will construct a 5,500 square foot addition to Huber Hall that will house the College’s Student Success Center. This will centralize the Academic Skills Center, Disability Services, Career Planning and Advisement.

Additionally, the entrance to the college’s library, which is located in Huber Hall, will be reconstructed to provide a greater presence to students on campus. Within the library, student study rooms will be built to allow students to complete academic group work within the facility. A library instruction classroom will also be constructed within the facility.

Main Building, 4th Floor Construction

A new student space will be constructed on the 4th floor of the Main Building at the Buffalo Campus. The Academic Commons will offer students an area to relax between classes, and purchase coffee and other refreshments, and attend various student activities. Faculty will also use the space to meet with students to review course work and mentor students.

The Study Lounge will provide students with an additional space on campus to study independently, or to meet for group project work. As with the entire campus, these areas will offer wireless technology for students to access the internet for research.

Kevin I. Sullivan Campus Center

In addition to the $2.65 million in approved construction projects, Medaille will also begin the planning process for a significant upgrade to the Sullivan Campus Center. While the decision to start this construction will come later, the plans will call for an expansion of the current gymnasium, which would raise the seating capacity to 1,000. The plans will also include construction of new locker rooms, fitness facilities and administrative space for the athletic department.
