Media Day to Showcase Communication Industries

Medaille Media Day, featuring communication professionals from western New York and beyond, will take place on Friday, November 9 on Medaille College’s Main Campus.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown will kick off the events with welcoming remarks at 9 a.m. in the Main Building Lobby, followed by panel sessions led by professionals from radio, television, journalism and public relations. These presentations will highlight the career options available to communication students and alumni along with developments within the media and communication fields. The day will continue with a luncheon, featuring talks by Don Tomasulo, director of sales at Entercom Communications, and Andy Brocato, community relations director at Tops Friendly Markets, and conclude with a meet and greet session for speakers, students, faculty and alumni.

Medaille College currently has over 100 students who are majoring in communication. The Communication Department’s five faculty members have a broad set of interests, from applied communication topics in broadcasting and journalism, to theoretical subjects of intercultural communication, mass communication and media law.

Radio 2007: The New Frontier
Moderated by Mike McKay, WBFO underwriting consultant, and Lou Pozentides, clini cal assistant professor of communication and field placement coordinator at Medaille. Panelists include Heidi Raphael, director of corporate communication at Greater Med ia, Inc., Eileen Buckley, assistant news director and WBFO assistant news director/reporter, and Andy Kazarowski, assistant program director at WWWS-AM.

What’s Next: Integrated & Multi-Media

Hosted by John Fronckowiak, instructor of computer information systems at Medaille, Brian Milbrand, multimedia technician at Medaille, Sarah Whitehead, visiting instructor of communication at Medaille, and Kara Kane, assistant director of communication at Medaille.

Putting It in Writing: A Career in Print Journalism

Moderated by Lisa Murphy, special assistant for college publications at Medaille. Panelists include Brian Meyer, City Hall reporter for the Buffalo News, Jim Heaney, investigative reporter for the Buffalo News, and Roger Puchalski, publisher/AM POL Eagle/Instructor.

On the Front Line: Managing the Message

Moderated by Lou Pozentides. Panelists include Mary Murray, public information off ice for the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Kevin Keenan, communications director for the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, Mike DeGeorge, spokesperson for the Buffalo Police Department, Melanie Gregg, public relations director for the Buffalo Mayor’s office, Bonnie Kane Lockwood, senior field representative for Congressman Brian Higgins, and Tim Walsh, manager of specialty group services for AAA of WNY.

Getting the Word Out: Public Relations

Moderated by Dick Shaner, senior vice president for public relations at Travers-Collins.

Panelists include Betsy Murrett, senior account manager, Kate Lewis Torok, account manager, and Jeff Bucki, assistant account manager and copywriter.

Behind the Scenes: Radio and TV Production

Moderated by Robert Mootry, freelance videographer.

Panelists include Val Pawlowski (Val Townsend), 104.1 WHTT on air personality, and Tom Vetter, freelance videographer.

Television Today

Moderated: Lisa Van Valkinburgh, clinical associate professor and chairperson of the Department of Communication, and Lou Pozentides. Panelists include Mylous Hairston, Channel 4 and 23, Mary Alice Demler, Channel 2, and Joanna Pasceri, Channel 7.
