Erion Presents on Pictures and Arguments

Dr. Gerald Erion, assistant professor of humanities, presented his paper, “Fleming on Pictures and Arguments,” at the West Virginia Philosophical Society meeting held at Westminster College on October 5.

Dr. Erion remarks: “Some philosophers have claimed that pictures (including drawings, paintings, photographs, etc.) cannot be used to express arguments, and that argumentation is an essentially linguistic activity. In my paper, I attempt to determine whether pictures can express ‘propositions,’ which is a prerequisite for their expressing arguments.”
