National Book Month

October is National Book Month, and two faculty members who teach in the literacy program have this to say about the books on their current reading lists.

Michelle Cefaratti, visiting instructor, says, “I usually have a couple (books) going at a one time these days, along with a textbook or two.” Her current reads are:

  • A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Kahled Hosseini (author of “The Kite Runner”). “This was my book club book last month. I haven’t finished it yet. It is excellent, but it’s heart-wrenching. It’s about the lives of two Afghani women.”
  • Life Changing Leadership, Making a Difference in the Loves of Others, by Mike Blaylock. “I chose that one because I met the author at a funeral and he sent me a copy. It is life-changing. I had my class read it this summer and all agreed it’s one you’ll read over and over again. It’s written like the author’s talking to you, and filled with a bunch of really inspiring anecdotes that you really relate to.”

Claudia Conway, clinical assistant professor, says “I am just about to start The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I was introduced to this book by a friend who is an assistant in the Guidance Department of one of the area middle schools.  Several of the teachers and staff at the school have a Book Club which meets after school, and they just finished reading this book.  It is classified as ‘young adult fiction,’ and it comes highly recommended.  In fact, it has won several awards.”
Sandra Ebling Errico, visiting instructor, says, “In addition to the professional textbook for my new classes this fall, I am trying to squeeze these in:”

  • Allergy Free, by Konrad Kail
  • Passionate Longevity The 10 Secrets to Growing Younger, by Dr. Elaine Dembe
  • The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne
  • The Rescue, by Nicholas Sparks
