Lavatelli Presents at the Diebenkorn Symposium in New Mexico
Mark Lavatelli, professor of humanities and director of the Visual and Digital Arts program, participated in the Diebenkorn in New Mexico Symposium on August 24, 2007. This event at the Harwood Museum of Art, which is affiliated with the University of New Mexico, showcased the work of Richard Diebenkorn. Nearly 300 people from 11 states and Canada attended this symposium.
Richard Diebenkorn was a graduate student at the University of New Mexico from 1950 to 1952 and created a powerful body of Abstract Expressionist art. He went on to have a celebrated career, best known for his Ocean Park series. Based on research Lavatelli did as a graduate student at the University of New Mexico in 1977 and 1978, including an interview with the artist, the Harwood Museum in Taos, NM commissioned him to write a catalogue essay (1 of 3) for the exhibition.
After the show in Taos, NM closes on September 9, the exhibition will move on to the San Jose Museum of Art and subsequently to the Grey Art Gallery at New York University. The exhibition catalogue, Diebenkorn in New Mexico, has been published by the University of New Mexico Press.
