Cheetah Wear Scores Big Online
A team of three students in the Accelerated Learning Program has captured first-place in an international online business competition for the week of July 9-15, 2007. The Business Strategy Game pits teams from business programs around the world against each other in an ongoing simulation where each of twenty weeks represents one year in the life of a company.
Laurence Beach, Jr., Charmaine Gray and Suann Prechel, members of the BBA-061 class, developed the fictional athletic footwear company Cheetah Wear as part of their undergraduate capstone course. As co-managers, the team built Cheetah Wear from the ground up, creating a brand while directing the manufacture, distribution, sales, marketing and finances of the company.
“The competition . . . shows that no one “right” or “wrong” decision will lead to success, but rather that you must be able to see the big picture, understand all of the variables and make tough choices and stick to your plan while making several decisions. It’s a great simulation and serves as a terrific capstone to the ALP,” said Scott Dixon, who teaches the course.
Dr. Judith Horowitz, Dean of the School of Adult and Graduate Education, offers, “We are so proud of these students not only for their individual achievement, but also because it validates much of the teaching that we do in Amherst. Because the program is so applications-based, it is gratifying to see our students doing so well in a simulation like this one.”
Each week, the BSG compiles the decisions of 903 teams and ranks the results along four measures: Overall Score (current year), Earnings/Share, Return on Average Equity, and Stock Price. Medaille’s ALP students have placed in the top twenty-scoring teams this season; with Cheetah Wear’s performance, Medaille has captured its first top score. With 80 points being the competition’s average, Medaille teams consistently score well above that level. In the current cohort, four teams have scored in the mid-90s, and one team scored 110.
